Over the summer and winter of 2019, I worked as a web developer to improve Rush Order's internal website for customers to track their orders. My primary task was optimizing pages to be mobile-responsive, for example by adding a hamburger menu for small, touchscreen devices. I also worked to reduce page load times by refactoring inefficient JavaScript and optimizing SQL queries.

Software Engineer Intern

At SumUp Analytics, I developed a RESTful API that used proprietary NLP algorithms to analyze and categorize search results. Users could then use a browser extension I developed to interact with the API and display results within certain webpages. I also designed pipelines to compare and visualize industry-leading machine learning models.

Digital Privacy

TLDR

Privacy is a fundamental human right. However, few people realize this, and even less are aware of how to accomplish it online. Most of us are aware we are being tracked by companies and governments around the world, but we aren't really sure why it matters or what we can do about it. What does incognito mode even do? What browser extensions do you need to protect yourself? How much does using a VPN actually help your browsing stay private?

In an effort to educate others, I created the Digital Privacy DeCal, a student-led class with over 60 students from UC Berkeley. As the lead facilitator, I established why privacy matters, how people are being tracked, and what users can do to protect themselves. I covered topics such as Tor, GDPR, and end-to-end encryption (E2EE).

The main takeaways? Use the privacy settings available to you under GDPR/CCPA, install a content blocker like uBlock Origin, and utilize E2EE as much as possible. If you're interested in learning more, I recommend Privacy Guides (previously Privacy Tools) and The New Oil.
